Challenge Denied!

Frank’s 366Movies in 366Days Challenge: FAILED

Hello fellow StreamChasers, I am here to let big, fat, depressing, self-loathing cat out of the bag. Firstly, I’ll properly introduce myself. I am the third member of our podcast trio that is the StreamChasers. My deepest & sincere apologies to you all for this being my first post. When you’ve thrown yourself face first into a pile some high grade herbal recreational drugs, you tend to lose some of your ambition. But enough pointing of the finger. I just thought, for anyone who’s interested, that I’d share the results my challenge for this year.

I could tell you it was a long “journey” through cinema that seemed like it would never end and that I had a blast while it lasted, when in fact some of the some the shit that I’ve watched lived up to the meaning of the word. The journey itself was easy going in the beginning, but as I fell behind schedule, it became more and more of a thing that just was and nothing more. Something I forced myself into and that would probably end in disappointment. Then I would get into these moods, like I just watched a training montage from a Rocky movie. I would tell myself, “As long as I keep it at this rate, then I should be fine”. Da Nile ain’t just a river in Egypt kids. I find myself currently in the acceptance stage as I write this and feel a great sense of relief as I put the unfinished 366 behind me. With 26 movies shy of my goal and only one day to watch them in I decided to throw in the towel. Sometimes you just have to know when to walk away and it wasn’t a great feeling at first.

This not to say that I didn’t have a good time watching the movies themselves this year. Most of them I actually liked quite a bit. Although there were some stinkers among the pile. I previously called them shit and that may be a harsh word to use when tangling with peoples’ artistic integrity and just slapping it across the face with bright red SHIT stamp. I mean, no one expects to make shit movies. Look it Owe Boll, for example. To him, his films are widely misjudged and he says “Fuck you!” to anyone who has a negative thought about his films. If you missed the few times we’ve brought up this particular filmmaker on the show, this is the fellow that challenged film critics that didn’t take a liking to his work to a boxing match and said “Go fuck yourselves” to the general public after his third attempt at crowd-funding failed for his picture, Rampage 3. Fascinating guy and has since quit filmmaking, but the point is everyone has the right to make what they will – yes Junior, even Kevin Smith – as long as it’s not some hate-monger type of bullshit. Which is probably why I find it hard to review and have yet to share some with you fine people, but I promise to get back into this shindig with full force while leaving my baggage at the door.

So, back to me be a failure at this challenge. Oh yeah, I totally didn’t finish this thing. It was no one’s fault, but my own. I’m a natural procrastinator, as my mother would say, and put too much on myself towards the end of this year. There’s just not enough hours in this last day for me to finish it now. I only wish I had that little magic hour glass Emma Watson had in Prisoner of Azkaban. If I weren’t in the acceptance stage currently and a few beers deep at the moment, I’d be glued to my TV set trying to crunch down that number closer to 366 and not sharing with you the titles I did get to witness this year, because no one likes looking at the glass half empty even though some us can’t help it. So getting past my self-pity and into the many movies I watched in the year 2016. I didn’t really plan out a selection for the entire year, which probably would’ve made it easier. Thinking about the prep work for it just sounds exhausting, especially for an indecisive fellow like myself. You will notice a few certain trends that may have occurred through the year, like my run of Kung Fu or horror movies, & will also discover some random choices, like how I jumped from Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo to David Cronenberg’s eXistneZ. If you wish to get more details on each movie you can click the link that’ll take you to my list posted on Letterboxd.com otherwise here is the bare-bones list below:

About the author

Frank Carney

Hey, and now here’s a bit about me. My podcasting history starts with a show called CinePLEXED, which centered on movie reviews & bullshit mostly. My appreciation for movies, tv, and pop culture stems back to my childhood and I have been lucky enough to have a job where I can enjoy most of those things on a regular basis. When I’m not posting news to the StreamChasers Facebook page, I work part time at World’s Best Comics & Toys located in Sacramento, CA. That’s all i can think of to tell about myself at this time…
